How deep is it and what is at the bottom of the lake?
Most of Lake Bagno dell'Acqua is characterized by a shallow depth (about 20-50 cm). However, there is a sudden depth that increases from 2 to about 10 m where the water becomes darker. The bottom of the lake is flat, with a maximum depth of 12 m. The bottoms vary in morphology and have carpets of microbiological nature that change with depth and seasons.
At low depths, the bottom is flat with rocks (microbialites) and soft sediments heavily altered by trampling. In spring, from 2 to 4 m deep, a bacterial/algal green carpet is observed. Between 4 and 6 m, the carpet is characterized by a surface dotted with vesicles, while between 6 and 8 m it becomes brownish-green with small light green net-like agglomerates. Along the entire lake, several gas emission points are also visible.
